Hi Petanquers! Our luck ran out today as the rain was too much to play, so that’s it for this year. We’ll wait for brighter and warmer weather in about 3 months. Hopefully we can enjoy a full season in 2022. Ken

It’s a beautiful sunny morning today (Thursday) so trust that the sun continues to shine on Monday the 6th for another game of petanque at 10.15 am on the pitch behind the library. It will be the last official gathering for this season so hope some of you will make it. Will probably restart early March unless I get mumblings it should be sooner. See you there; newbies still welcome. Ken

 Monday 22nd November

A beautiful crisp November day greeted us this morning as half a dozen members rendezvoused on the petanque pitch.   The sun shone on us and we had reasonable shelter from the light breeze with the help of two hedges and the library itself. 

Easily dividing into two teams of ladies and laddies the former kicked off and scored a one point start.   And then a second point.....and then another two before the laddies managed to recover a single point.   And then another but to no avail as the ladies roared away to a grand win with 13 points against 7.    We’ll have one last game this year (weather permitting) on the 6th December again at 10.15 am on the pitch behind the library. 

 A bit fresher than usual, this morning, when 9 of us came together for another enjoyable game of petanque.    I arrived a little earlier and gave the pitch a quick rake over before starting.    Comment was made about how cold to the touch the steel boules were on first handling but as the idea is to throw them fairly quickly there was no problem. 

Dividing into two teams, one of 4 ladies and one of 3 gents and a token gent plus a scorer, play was under way and soon the score was 1 - 1.    The ladies then pulled ahead by a fair margin before the gents recovered a little ground.   But then the ladies continued to make good scores with the gents managing only the odd 1 or 2 here and there and after just under an hour’s play the ladies remained triumphant and finished with 13 points with the gents trailing at 6.   There were some pretty close calls though.

Because it was quite an early finish we decided to have another single quick game and the gents redeemed themselves winning by 3 points.

We had a quick conversation as to whether we continue to play on this year and decided that if the weather stayed bright we’d meet as often as possible.    That being said, our next game is scheduled for a fortnight’s time (22nd) again at 10.15 am on the pitch behind the library so if you were thinking of giving it a go, come and join us as it may be your last chance this year.

It was an early morning of doubts- would we play or wouldn’t we play. Once the rain stopped there was a flurry of messages and as the sky was now turning blue the decision to meet up at 10-15 as usual was taken.
Nine of us drew lots to form the two teams which coincidentally this time was a red team made up of five ladies and the blue team  three men plus one lady to give them a chance.
Play was quite close until in one round the blue team scored 5 taking them into the lead. The game finished 14 to the blue team 6 to the reds. Luckily the blue skies had stayed with us throughout our game because as we headed home the grey clouds came over and the rain came down.
We will meet again on Monday 8 November - please come and join us
